2008 have for me been a year full of nice music, full of nice, NEW music. Ill try and make a top 10 chart of the best 2008 albums. An achievement that deserves to be award with a Nobel award, because picking out the ten best albums of '08 is going to be close to impossible.
#10: Boys Noize - Oi Oi Oi
German house/dance at it's best. Discovered it trough the amazingly great Soundvenue samples, where they once in the spring gave me "& Down"This is the one of those albums that've followed me around the whole year, and if I ever feel tired this is what goes on, and suddenly I'm all happy and full of energy again.
There's nothing super special about the music, just full throttle beats in a high, high pace.
Only real reference to something else, where someone who thought it was Daft Punk at some party where I played it. So I guess some of it sounds like that, well it does, apparently.
#09: Hercules and Love Affair - Hercules and Love Affair
Let's go, Disco!!If you wont get happy by listening to this, you can truly call yourself emo, even without dyeing you're hair black. :)
This was one of my very favorite summer albums, I brought it along to a trip to Berlin and for me, it really was the soundtrack of the trip.
No doubt about the very best track is "Hercules Theme" but most of the other stuff is definatly worth a listen too, such as "Athene" and "True False/Fake Real"
Another cool thing about this album is that Anthony from Anthony and The Johnsons is Lead Vocal at 4 of the tracks. Now it's your job to find them..!
#08: Teitur - The Singer
This is as fragile as it gets. Singer/songwriter from the Faroe Islands, he lives in Denmark and thank god for that, that gave him the possibility to be the opening act at Orange Stage at Roskilde this summer, which resulted in a super concert. Not that this is important for the album though. The album is full of great tracks based on even greater lyrics. With tracks like the very slow and silent "the singer" the story about a murder on the run at "Guilt by Association" and the oh-so happy "Catherine the Waitress" This might be one of the albums I've heard the very most since the start of the summer.
On a side note, his previous album "Stay Under The Stars" is super-duper as well.
#07: Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
I know, I know. I might not reveal anything you don't know with this one, but that doesn't make this album less good.I sadly first got to it in the start of December. But since then I've been a happy listener of the album, very often.
I haven't got much to say about this, this is just how folk'ish indie should be.
I must admit though, that my very favorite is "White Winter Hymnal" aaaaand maybe "Ragged Wood"
Ohh, and am I the only one who tense to think that there's som Band of Horses'ish parts on the album?
#06: MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
MGMT formerly known as Managment, is one of many good things with roots in Brooklyn. If you've lived in a cave, in a forest, at a small island in the pacific - You might actually not have heard about MGMT. If you haven't, you have heard about MGMT. That's a good thing though.
Like Hercules and Love Affair this album have had a big role in my summer. Influencing with its great collection of Psych tunes. MGMT have been the frontier of the whole Psych wave that have followed '08 with other incredible names, such as Tame Impala and Amazing baby. Yea, yea, they might be a bit high and stoned sometimes, but at least it results in good music. So, MGMT, pleeease keep on doing drugs ;)
#05: Lykke Li - Youth Novel
Swedish pop, gotta love it!If I could marry a voice I'd marry Lykke Li's!! Trough the whole album Lykke Li's incredible vocals makes the songs more than just songs.
The 13 tracks long album contains very various songs, both deep and poetic stuff like "This Trumpeth In My Head" and more happy and pop'ish ones like "dance, dance, dance"
"Dance, dance, dance" have also got the honor of making a very bad day, very good for me.!
#04: Foals - Antidotes
Yet another that I guess you know?!Foals are sharing Fleet Foxes's record company, Sup Pop. They're playing Math-rock... and thats a good thing. I can't really put my finger on what it is, that makes this album so darn good, but it is darn good, and that's the main thing. As a favorite tune there is the 6 minut long "Big, Big Love" which is a great mix of a lot of great parts.
This album might "only" get 4th best, but cover-wise I absolutely love this album!! So if anyone want to give me a Christmas present, just send me a poster of the cover!! please?
#03: The William Blakes - Wayne Coyne
Danish band, wooya! they ran away to NYC though..Weird band name, great album, with a weird name as well.
The William Blakes got some kind of a religion/power theme on the album, with tunes like "Science Is Religion", "Violent God" and "The Love From Above" That does spoil the album though, it's an album with loads of great songs with parts full of nice choir. I had a listen earlier today, to try and find the best tunes, just to realize that all the tracks are amazingly good.
By the way, this album were definatly also a contender for the best cover of '08 ;)
#02: Choir of Young Believers - This Is For The White In Your Eyes
This is an one man project, reasoning the band name very well ;)It's an album made by Jannis Noya Makrigiannis, Jannis are by many people regarded as one of the very most important people for the danish music scene in '08 Not only is Jannis an important guy, he he've also made a great, great, great album. "This Is For The White In Your Eyes" is without a doubt the best danish album from '08. The 10 songs contains a great harmony and most of them endes up in a big and melodic affair, "Hollow Talk" is a great example og this.
#01: Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles
Waaauw. This was love at first listen. First time I heard "Crimeware" I absolutly loved Crystal Castles.Crystal Castles makes the best 8-bit I've heard, if anyone know of any better, please, please tell me.
I'd really like to point out one track that I dont like, but truth is I really cant find that "bad" track on the album. It's their debute album, and pleeeeaase support them so they'll make another album.
This is like #10 (Oi, Oi, Oi) an album I'll play when I have to get going and get fresh, and its most possible playing when im getting ready for a night out.
This was the top 10... I could've made a top 40. Between some of the other favorites from '08:
- Seasick Steve - I Started Out With Nothing And I Still Got Most Of It Left
- Hot Chip - Made In The Dark
- Late Of The Pier - Fantasy Black Channel
- Lily Electric - You're In The Painting You Saw
- Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson - Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson
- Spleen United - Neanderthal
